In recent articles it could be read that owners are seriously looking in to LNG propulsion. It is reported that AP Moller-Maersk are planning to build 20 LNG-powered Container vessels. It appears to be competition between the South-Korean big four, Samsung Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and STX Offshore & Shipbuilding about the this “green ship” project. The engine manufacturers have of course been working LNG as fuel for their engines as well. I. e. the MAN B&W GI-engine and Wärtsilä.
It will certainly be interesting to follow the development of this project as one challenge that have been discussed in the industry is if enough fuel could be stored for longer journeys which needs to be solved. If big players as Maersk takes the first step there for sure will be followers.
