SKB’s vessel M/S Sigyn has served the Swedish nuclear waste program in a safe manner since the early 1980s. In 2013, transport will be done with a new vessel, specially designed for the task and with strict environmental and safety requirements. SKB has signed an agreement with the dutch Damen Shipyards Group to build the ship.
The need for safe transportation of used nuclear fuel and radioactive waste will be there for longtime to come. SKB has decided to build a new vessel to replace the existing M/S Sigyn.
The specification of the new ship are tough - both in terms of safety and the environment. The new vessel, for example, to have redundancy in the operation, with six small, fuel-efficient engines. There will also be equipped with catalytic treatmentfor best fuel economy with minimum environmental impact.
- With the cargo in mind, the ship will transport the high requirements of both the environmental impact as well as safty, ”says SKB president Claes Thegerströmin a comment and continues:
- We are now after a thorough procurement process been able to sign a contract with Damen Shipyards Group. Damen is a large and reputable company, with a broad experience in building vessels of various kinds and sizes.
- This new ship is, like its predecessor, unique in many ways. Damen has presented a good unique concept and been responsive to the requirements we set.
Until the new vessel is completed, SKB’s existing transport ship M / S Sigyn to continue carrying the Swedish spent fuel and radioactive waste from nuclear power plants and SKB’s facilities.
